AIMP 2 + Traction Radio 2.0

Today I tested out AIMP 2 which is a [russian] freeware audio player. Check out their site for a free download, skins and plugins. Overall it’s a great tidy player that doesn’t munch up many system resources *cough* WMP11 *cough*. It’s really great and all and kinda reminds me of winamp. I think I like it more though.

In other news, Traction a great app for gamers which lets you listen to lag free streaming music without hogging memory resources, oh and it has in-game accesibility. You can pick stations via genre and intensity (ex: hard rock). It’s crossing from their beta 1.0 version and releasing a 2.0 version included with games. The first title will be Tom Clancy’s EndWar which will launch November 4th. Ah it feels like only yesterday that they were releasing the beta version…

New Open source Mobile OS

“According to a recent report from ABI Research, mobile Linux OSes will
outsell Windows Mobile and other competitors by 2013, with Intel’s
Moblin, the Nokia-backed Maemo, and LiMo set to gain the lion’s share
of the MID market. Although just over 305,000 ($29 million) MIDs are
predicted to ship this year, Forward Concepts predicts 39.6 million
($2.6 billion) units will ship in 2012. ABI forecasts 50 million units
the following year. ABI’s Stuart Carlaw stated, “Maemo is already in
this space thanks to the patronage of Nokia; Moblin will benefit from
tight integration with Atom and Intel’s drive; and LiMo is actively
being positioned for this market.””

Performance wise I can only imagine that it will be extremely fast and reliable, because Linux has always been like that. Imagine spinning the compiz-fusion cube or sphere around with your fingers on a touch screen while all your friends peer over your shoulders. Imagine all the innovative and open source projects placed into a mobile market.  You thought the iphone was innovative? Wait until you see a linux phone!

Google Chrome - Released TODAY!

http://www.google.ca/chromeToday, Google has released their new open source browser named Chrome as a public beta. My first impressions are WOW. First off the installation was a breeze, all I did was click download, wait, and then start the browser up. With out even asking me anything, everything from my previous browser, firefox, was imported. Including bookmarks and passwords. Impressive? Yes. The look and feel is very open source like, the close, minimize, and restore buttons look like clones of Linux distro buttons, and everything looks simple, elegant, and clean. Chrome has almost every feature you would find in firefox or IE such as tabbed browsing, safety features, search bars, bookmarks, ect. But Chrome has brought a lot of new material to the table, offering several unique features, which you can read about here. Check it out.  Read the rest of this entry »

Sony’s PS3 change.

I got to talk to a PS3 Rep in person about the new 160GB version of the PS3, the new 160GB HDD will be used primarily for TV shows and movie downloads from the playstation network. Cool huh?

Oh and also the 40GB’s HDD will be bumped to 80GB, no backwards compatiblility or memory card reader though. Just writting this to tell all you sony fans out there :)

The Green Pen

green penOk this isn’t a tech post, but it’s very interesting. It’s a 100% biodegradable pen made from corn and there’s better news for your inner tree-huger. When it runs out of ink, you can slide it into the ground and a seed located at the top of the pen will grow into a flower and after 8 months the rest of the pen will decompose and become fertilizer!

How F-in’ cool is that!

CSS: Z-Index property

Here’s something I learned about just today

Note: I’m a bit of a noob to CSS but I hope your all on the same page and can make sense of what I’m saying

Here’s a useful little tip for people writing CSS, try using the Z-index property for organising the placement of anything (a div for example). It’s sort of like using layers in photoshop, organize the layers (divs here) in to the order you want them to appear, here’s some information I found on w3.

(more found here - the source)

“Definition

The z-index property sets the stack order of an element. An element with greater stack order is always in front of another element with lower stack order.

Note: Elements can have negative stack orders.

Note: Z-index only works on elements that have been positioned (eg position:absolute!”

Example:
img
{
z-index: -1
}

Example:
#apDiv5 {
position:absolute;
left:3%;
top:19px;
width:242px;
height:216px;
z-index:2;
}
